Volunteering
How the community can help
The St Vincent de Paul Society relies on the dedicated voluntary commitment of many men and women to provide person-to-person service for those in need.
Volunteers are part of the Vincentian family. They are treated with mutual respect, trust, dignity and compassion and their talents skills and commitment are valued highly.
The Society’s core activity is Home Visitation which enables volunteers to offer a variety of assistance to the disadvantaged in the privacy and security of their own homes.
Approximately 200 volunteers operate the Night Patrol program bringing warm drinks and a friendly face to the lonely and destitute on the streets of Canberra and Queanbeyan.
Vinnies Youth run a number of programs and activities for disadvantaged young people and young home carers.
Volunteers are always in short supply and there is no shortage of work including:
-
Collection and delivery of clothing and goods
-
Sorting of donated goods
-
Helping in Vinnies Centres
-
Clerical work such as answering telephones, typing and filing and general office work
-
Taking residents of our Special Works on outings and/or visiting them
-
Visiting the aged and including them in family outings
-
Assisting with counselling on budgets and other financial matters
-
Providing advice and assisting with publicity and fundraising
-
Long-term visitation of the aged, disabled and housebound.
